Music Assemblies That Are Interactive Help the Message Shine Through!

Engagement, engagement, engagement! Elementary school music assemblies are extremely impactful and have the ability to help the entire school unify within a common theme. When assemblies are interactive and encourage participation, the message being shared becomes even more powerful.  Coast to Coast School Assembly programs are designed to deliver a message through music all while having students become part of the show. When students are engaged, the lesson becomes fun and true learning takes place.

Why is engagement and participation so important? As Benjamin Franklin famously said “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” Coast to Coast School Assembly programs integrate participation in every elementary school assembly. Students learn sign language to some of the songs in the assembly program which is both engaging and helps the students learn a new skill. Songs in Coast to Coast School Assembly programs have some type of movement or echo/call and response. Rather than simply being listeners and observers of the musical performance, students become contributors which makes the learning experience more memorable.

Brian and Andre Chevalier are masters at what educators refer to as “scaffolded engagement.” This means that at the beginning of the school assembly performance, they will encourage students to participate in a way that is “low stakes” and therefore everyone will succeed. This can look like asking the students to clap or simply echo a line in a song. This low stakes involvement is done as a whole group and so everyone succeeds.  As the students’ confidence builds, their engagement, enthusiasm and involvement grows.  Students’ hands will be up in the air and they will eagerly offer input related to the theme of the assembly. By the end of the musical assembly, it is clear that joyful learning is taking place because students are clapping, singing and participating in the show. And of course, students love to be chosen to volunteer and come up front for songs!! This type of interactive school assembly helps build school spirit as well as a strong sense of school community. Interactive and engaging musical assembly shows help foster creativity and self confidence. Being able to participate in front of a crowd of peers is memorable for students and builds confidence that positively affects their entire lives.
