School Assemblies in New York's Capital Region: Albany, Schenectady & Saratoga

Coast to Coast School Assemblies has been performing in schools since 1995, and the Capital Region is where we are based. Practically, that means three things that matter to you and have nothing to do with how good the show is.

1. Travel is a short drive, not an overnight. Travel and lodging are a real line in most assembly quotes. For a Capital Region school they largely disappear, which is why our pricing here is the most competitive we offer anywhere.

2. Short-notice dates are genuinely possible. If a January slot opens because a scheduled programme falls through, a local performer can fill it. One three hours away usually cannot.

3. We can come back. A single assembly followed by a return visit later in the year, or a multi-day songwriting residency, is realistic locally in a way it is not at distance.

The Capital Region school map

Capital Region BOCES serves 24 component school districts across Albany, Schenectady, Schoharie and southern Saratoga counties. Add Rensselaer County and the northern Saratoga districts served by other BOCES, and the practical catchment for a day's work runs from Troy and Cohoes through Albany and Schenectady out to Saratoga Springs, Ballston Spa and Guilderland.

The mix is unusually wide for a compact area. Albany and Schenectady city schools sit minutes from suburban districts like Niskayuna, Bethlehem and Shenendehowa, and rural districts in Schoharie are half an hour further out. The same programme has to work in all three, which is a useful discipline - a show that only lands in one kind of building is not a Capital Region programme.

The BOCES connection is worth pursuing. Regional arts-in-education services can sometimes handle the contracting for enrichment programming, and occasionally part of the cost. Your district's BOCES liaison will know whether it applies. It is a five-minute question with an occasionally large payoff.

What New York requires: DASA, not HIB

If you have worked in New Jersey, put the HIB vocabulary aside. New York's framework is the Dignity for All Students Act. Under DASA, no student may be subjected to discrimination, harassment or bullying - including cyberbullying - by employees or other students on school property or at a school function. Districts must revise their codes of conduct accordingly, name a DASA Coordinator, and make that information available to students, staff and families, including in languages other than English where needed. The NYSED information guide is the primary document.

The instructional piece is the part that matters for assembly planning. DASA requires schools to incorporate curriculum that promotes awareness of and sensitivity to discrimination and diversity as part of civility and citizenship instruction. Note what that does and does not say: it requires curriculum, not an event. New York, unlike New Jersey, does not designate a single statutory week for it.

That has one practical upside. Because there is no state-mandated October week, the New York assembly calendar is less brutally compressed than New Jersey's, and you have more freedom to pick a date that suits your building. Most schools still cluster around October, because National Bullying Prevention Month is a useful hook - see our October planning checklist - but you are not competing for the same five days that every New Jersey district needs.

Worth knowing for context: every teacher and administrator certified in New York since the end of 2013 has completed six hours of DASA training on harassment, bullying and discrimination. Your staff are not starting from zero, which means an assembly that only defines bullying is pitched below the room. The programmes that land give students language and practice, not definitions.

A word on the residency, because it is the one that gets undersold. An assembly delivers a message to students. A residency has them make something - words they wrote, recorded and can play to their families. For a school trying to shift how children see themselves rather than what they know, it does more. It also costs more and asks more of your staff, and for plenty of buildings a single well-chosen assembly is the better decision. We would tell you which we think you need.

What an assembly can and cannot do

We would rather set the expectation correctly than oversell. StopBullying.gov, run by the US Department of Health and Human Services, is explicit that effective prevention is a whole-school approach sustained over time. A single assembly with nothing before or after it is an hour of entertainment.

What does have strong evidence behind it is the surrounding programme. Durlak and colleagues reviewed 213 school-based social and emotional learning programmes covering 270,034 students and found an 11-percentile-point gain in academic achievement, alongside improvements in behaviour and attitudes toward school. The assembly's job is to launch and reinforce that work: one shared vocabulary, delivered to everyone on the same morning, in a form children remember.

For scale on the underlying problem, about 19 percent of students aged 12-18 reported being bullied at school in 2021-22, down from 28 percent in 2010-11, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Improving, but still one child in five.
