School Assemblies on Long Island: Nassau & Suffolk Programs

Quick answer: Long Island has roughly 125 public school districts across Nassau and Suffolk - Nassau BOCES alone serves 56 component districts and Eastern Suffolk BOCES another 51 - which makes it the densest concentration of separate school districts in New York State. That density is the whole opportunity: districts sit minutes apart, so one performer can reach two or three schools in a day, and the per-student cost falls sharply. Long Island schools plan around DASA rather than a fixed statutory week, so you have real freedom over dates.

Why 125 districts changes the maths

Nassau BOCES is governed by a board elected from its 56 component districts. Eastern Suffolk BOCES describes itself as a cooperative of 51 Long Island school districts, with Western Suffolk BOCES covering the remainder of the county. Put together, Nassau and Suffolk run somewhere around 125 separate public school districts.

For most purposes that fragmentation is a headache - 125 superintendents, 125 calendars, 125 procurement processes. For assembly booking it is an advantage, because those districts are physically close together. In Nassau in particular, three elementary schools in three different districts can be within fifteen minutes of each other.

That is unusual. In most of the country, sharing a booked day means coordinating buildings inside one large district. On Long Island it means calling the school two towns over. The obstacle is social, not logistical: someone has to make the call.

What New York requires: DASA, not HIB

If you have worked in New Jersey, put the HIB vocabulary aside. New York's framework is the Dignity for All Students Act. Under DASA, no student may be subjected to discrimination, harassment or bullying - including cyberbullying - by employees or other students on school property or at a school function. Districts must revise their codes of conduct accordingly, name a DASA Coordinator, and make that information available to students, staff and families, including in languages other than English where needed. The NYSED information guide is the primary document.

The instructional piece is the part that matters for assembly planning. DASA requires schools to incorporate curriculum that promotes awareness of and sensitivity to discrimination and diversity as part of civility and citizenship instruction. Note what that does and does not say: it requires curriculum, not an event. New York, unlike New Jersey, does not designate a single statutory week for it.

That has one practical upside. Because there is no state-mandated October week, the New York assembly calendar is less brutally compressed than New Jersey's, and you have more freedom to pick a date that suits your building. Most schools still cluster around October, because National Bullying Prevention Month is a useful hook - see our October planning checklist - but you are not competing for the same five days that every New Jersey district needs.

Worth knowing for context: every teacher and administrator certified in New York since the end of 2013 has completed six hours of DASA training on harassment, bullying and discrimination. Your staff are not starting from zero, which means an assembly that only defines bullying is pitched below the room. The programmes that land give students language and practice, not definitions.

Nassau and Suffolk are not the same booking problem

It is worth being specific rather than treating the Island as one market.

• Nassau is dense and compact. Drive times between districts are short, enrichment budgets are generally healthier, and PTAs are well organised and used to funding programming. Sharing a day between two districts is straightforward.

• Western Suffolk behaves much like Nassau - close districts, active PTAs, comfortable drive times.

• Eastern Suffolk is a genuinely different proposition. Districts are further apart, some are small, and a performer's travel becomes a real cost line. Here, a full day inside one district beats a day split across three, and booking two or three consecutive days out east makes more sense than a single visit.

If you are out east and your building is small, the honest advice is to find a partner school before you ask for a quote. It changes what any provider can offer you.

What Long Island schools book, and when

The categories are the same as anywhere; the timing is what varies:

One local constraint: Long Island districts run heavy spring concert and testing calendars, and June is effectively unbookable in most buildings. If you want an end-of-year event, look at the options in end-of-year assembly ideas and plan it a year out.

What an assembly can and cannot do

We would rather set the expectation correctly than oversell. StopBullying.gov, run by the US Department of Health and Human Services, is explicit that effective prevention is a whole-school approach sustained over time. A single assembly with nothing before or after it is an hour of entertainment.

What does have strong evidence behind it is the surrounding programme. Durlak and colleagues reviewed 213 school-based social and emotional learning programmes covering 270,034 students and found an 11-percentile-point gain in academic achievement, alongside improvements in behaviour and attitudes toward school. The assembly's job is to launch and reinforce that work: one shared vocabulary, delivered to everyone on the same morning, in a form children remember.

For scale on the underlying problem, about 19 percent of students aged 12-18 reported being bullied at school in 2021-22, down from 28 percent in 2010-11, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Improving, but still one child in five.

• Share a day across two or three schools. The single biggest lever, and easier here than almost anywhere else in the country.

• Book two sittings in a large building rather than one oversized one. Better value and a better experience for both grade bands.

• Avoid October if you can. January and February are cheaper and easier.

• Ask your BOCES about arts-in-education contracting. Nassau and both Suffolk BOCES run regional services, and in some arrangements the contracting - occasionally part of the cost - can run through them. Ask your district liaison; it takes five minutes.

Yes. Nassau and western Suffolk are straightforward single-day trips. For eastern Suffolk we prefer to build a two or three day block, which also gives you better value.

Can schools in different districts share one booking?

Yes, and on Long Island it is the most effective cost lever available. Each school contracts separately if it needs to; what is shared is the day.
