Quick answer: Rochester City School District lists 39 schools — 24 elementary, 14 secondary and one K-12 — serving about 21,900 PreK-12 students as of September 2025. Assemblies are chosen building by building. The programs Rochester schools book most are character education and anti-bullying, SEL, mindfulness and reading motivation, and the funding routes worth trying first are Monroe 1 or Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES arts-in-education, then Title IV-A, then PTO. Book spring for fall dates.

What makes Rochester different from Buffalo

Rochester has something few upstate districts have at this scale: a very large charter sector sitting alongside the district. RCSD's own profile has reported charter enrollment in the thousands against a district PreK-12 enrollment of roughly 21,900, and counts more than 34,000 students in total once charter, urban-suburban, private-parochial and placed students are included.

That changes what an assembly is for. In a district with no real competition, school culture is a compliance question. In Rochester, it is also an enrollment question. Families choosing between a neighbourhood school and a charter are choosing on things they can see and hear about — whether their child is happy there, whether the building feels safe, whether anything happens that children go home and talk about. A whole-school event that 500 children describe at the dinner table is a retention tool as much as a character education one.

That is worth saying out loud when you make the case to your principal, because it reframes the line item from "nice to have" to "enrollment".

The Dignity Act, and what it actually asks of you

New York's Dignity for All Students Act has applied to every public school since July 2012. Two parts shape assembly planning:

  • Instruction in civility, citizenship and character education is required under Education Law §801-a, extended by DASA to cover awareness of race, weight, national origin, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity and sex.

  • Every school designates a trained Dignity Act Coordinator, who is usually the person this decision lands on.

Districts report material incidents of discrimination, harassment and bullying to the State Education Department. No assembly satisfies DASA by itself. What it does is give a building one hour where every student hears the same thing at the same time, and give staff a shared vocabulary they can call back to for the rest of the year. Our upstander vs. bystander lessons are the classroom follow-through that turns one morning into a semester.

Funding it in Monroe County

Monroe 1 BOCES and Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES both run arts-in-education services, and many districts in the region can route character education and arts programming through them rather than paying from a building budget. This changes the approval path as much as the price, and it is the first thing to check. Our booking form asks whether you are funding through BOCES, and our affiliations page lists the regional partners we work through.

After that: federal Title IV-A funds cover safe and healthy student programming, with bullying prevention an eligible use; then PTO and building budgets, where our guides to PTA fundraising and grants and funding apply. For general pricing, see what a school assembly costs.

Our programs

We have been in elementary schools since 1995, working with live interactive music rather than slides — a decision about how children retain things. Most students cannot recall the content of an assembly a month later. Most can still sing a chorus from one.

The Respect Tour — character education and anti-bullying, aimed at the audience rather than the small number of students doing the bullying, because the audience decides how an incident ends.

Freedom Within — mindfulness and stress management, with techniques students can use on their own.

Gather Here — a multicultural music program, built around curiosity about difference rather than a lecture about it.

Rock Out For Reading — reading motivation, strongest in the run-up to summer.

And our sensory-friendly and special education programs run at controlled sound levels with predictable structure, so the assembly includes every student rather than excusing a few.

When to book

February to May for the following fall, which is also the BOCES service request window. October is National Bullying Prevention Month and goes first. November to February has the best availability and often the best rate. Keep the state testing window clear of anything that moves the whole school, but the fortnight before it is ideal for a mindfulness program.

Rochester sits on the Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse corridor we route as one trip. Schools that book in the same week as a neighbour share the travel day and pay less each.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should we book? Four to six months for October, two to three months for the rest of the year.

Do you work with Rochester charter schools? Yes. BOCES purchasing generally will not apply, but the programs and the booking process are the same.

Can several Rochester schools book together? Yes, and it is the cheapest way to do it. Buildings close together share a travel day.

How long is the assembly? About 45 minutes, in a gym, cafetorium or auditorium. We bring our own sound.
